Matthew 18:21-19:1

The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

21Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often(A) will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him?(B) As many as seven times?" 22Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.[a]

23"Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished(C) to settle accounts with his servants.[b] 24When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him(D) ten thousand(E) talents.[c] 25(F) And since he could not pay, his master ordered him(G) to be sold, with his wife and(H) children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26So the servant[d](I) fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' 27And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and(J) forgave him the debt. 28But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred(K) denarii,[e] and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, 'Pay what you owe.' 29So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' 30He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32Then his master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33(L) And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' 34(M) And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers,[f](N) until he should pay all his debt. 35(O) So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother(P) from your heart."

Matthew 19

Teaching About Divorce

1Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from(Q) Galilee and(R) entered(S) the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.

To forgive and let go

Not all banks charge interest on loans. A peculiarity of Islamic banks is that no interest is collected on borrowed funds because Islamic banking regulations forbid it. The banks earn their income from services rendered to clients.

If this same rule is applied to regular banks, how happy will all borrowers get. Alas, this can't happen because lending is the banks' primary source of income.

But perhaps the policy may work best with people. If, for instance, somebody borrows money from another, interest should not be charged. In the first place, the person asking for money is in need and imputing an interest on it is penalizing him for his sorry predicament. The person needs all the help he can get.

On a higher level, probably, no interest should be collected, too, on incursions of a person on another. If somebody commits a sin against anybody, the former    [ continue reading... ]
