Jesus Walks on the Water 22(A) Immediately he(B) made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23And after he had dismissed the crowds,(C) he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When(D) evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat by this time was a long way[a] from the land,[b] beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25And(E) in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea,(F) they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, (G) "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid." 28And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." 29He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and(H) walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind,[c] he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out,(I) "Lord, save me." 31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, (J) "O you of little faith, why did you(K) doubt?" 32And when they got into the boat,(L) the wind ceased. 33And(M) those in the boat(N) worshiped him, saying,(O) "Truly you are(P) the Son of God."
Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret
34(Q) And when they had crossed over, they came to land at(R) Gennesaret. 35And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and(S) brought to him all who were sick 36and implored him that they might only touch(T) the fringe of his garment. And(U) as many as touched it were made well.
A life Lived for the call Before his renown, St. John Vianney was a youth with a poor mind. But he wanted to be a priest. To his rescue came Father Balley, who pleaded to the church hierarchy for his cause and tutored him so he could survive learning in the seminary. After his ordination, the young Vianney began to develop the ability to deliver powerful sermons and showed the potential to be a confessor.
Yet, he didn’t have the dispensation. So again, Father Balley, who continued to mentor him on theology, asked the church to allow him to practice that ministry.
Fr. Vianney’s strength was that he was able to communicate effectively – simple people understood him. He was assigned to Ars, a village in France that the Vicar General described as a parish where “there is not much love for God.” But by prayer and mortification, he was able to lead the people to conversion. Soon, they were attending Mass, attracted to and inspired by his beautiful sermons. Then, he developed in them the love for the Sacraments until such time the community became fully transformed for which it became prominent. Read more...
