Heart-breaking Pain

Jn. 6:60-69

H
as anyone broken your heart?

Today's Gospel must have been one of the heart-wrenching moments in the life of Jesus when the multitudes of followers started to grumble and eventually left Him during those times of difficulty.

Jesus must have been broken-hearted at the sight of people walking away from Him. The very same people whom He has helped, healed and taken good care of suddenly have lost their faith and deserted Him.

It is already a tragedy when a friend or a loved one has quit on us at the time we needed them most. It is the kind of hurt that is usually unbearable, something that gives us the sad look in our eyes. It creates a deep wound that might not heal for a long, long time.

Now, multiply that kind of pain thousands of times over and imagine how the faithlessness of the people has broken the heart of Jesus into thousands of bits and pieces as well.

We may not know it but we cause Jesus the same kind of hurt when we start to doubt His goodness. We cause Him great pain as well whenever we worry and lose hope.

We break His heart whenever we forget His promises or give up on His assurances that He will never forsake us.

Consider this: the very same things that make us quit should bring us closer instead to God. Yes, we may suffer during our weakest moments, but it is most certain that we will find comfort in no time when we  entrust everything to Him.

Prayer:

Almighty Father, please help us to bear our burdens with so much faith that our sufferings will move us  instead to seek You more! Amen.
