The Gatekeeper

by Max Estayo

Jn. 5:17-30

I'
ll let you in on a little secret about my life as a journalist. I often get scoops or exclusive stories from the secretaries and aides of the officials that I run after.

Once I know the whereabouts of their bosses or who they are talking to, I know what's going on and I have a big story.

I call these people gatekeepers, because they hold the key or access to the doors of their bosses. Sometimes, as in this case, straight lines don't always work. We need a little runaround with the staff to hit the subject.

Which is not very different from how we should reach the Father. God has sent His son to man the gates for Him, and so whomever believes in the son will gain entry to heaven.

The trouble happens when we look down on this gatekeeper as did the Jews. As a result, the doors of heaven were closed to them.

Imagine the Father as a most sought-after CEO, who welcomes only men and women of like rank. But because we are friends with his secretary, who happens to be his son, we are given access to the doors of his ivory tower and get to have an audience with him.

We are that special to God because we are special to Christ, whom we have recognized and accepted as our Savior. Now, that is not a secret.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, as we believe in You, bring us to the Father's house to live there in joy and favor forever. Amen.
