A Simple Story of Faith

Jn. 4:43-54

G
racia Burnham in her book In the Presence of My Enemies recounted how she asked her son to pray for her husband and his father who couldn't be found in the air after he took off with his small plane.

Anxious for assurance, Gracia called out to her son a second time for prayer while asking him to stop whatever he was doing. Exasperated, the son said, "I've already said my prayers, mom."

The child's attitude is the ideal faith that every Christian should have, while the mother's uncertainty reflects the kind of faith most of us have. How often do we pray to God yet we wallow in worry?

The Galilean in today's Gospel exactly had that child s faith, in that after asking Jesus for his son's healing, he simply believed and walked away. And Jesus did heal the sick child as He promised. End of the story.

Compare that with most of our own experiences where we remain uneasy after having asked God for something. The more we complicate our request, the harder the answer comes.  Simply ask and believe, so the ending is quick and simple. That s what it should be.

The Lord wants us not to be anxious, but to make our requests known to Him in prayer (Phil. 4:6). For even when we re sailing on a sea of tempest, God is never asleep, for He holds His creation on the palm of His hand.

Prayer:

Father, help us build a strong faith. Your love is one that always fulfills. May we feel this love more and more, and believe You will do as You promise. Amen.
