The Easy Way to Forgiveness

Mt. 18:21-35

T
here is a writer who once said, “As bread is the first need of the body, so forgiveness is for the soul.” So, we are to pray, regularly, for forgiveness.

Forgiving people can be one of the toughest things that Christ commands us to do, but it is something that we are commanded to do.

Christianity won’t be complete without forgiveness. It is the most basic Christian quality. Without it, we would all be condemned sinners without hope of any kind.

A proper understanding of forgiveness will transform our relationship with God, with others and with ourselves.

In our Gospel today, Jesus shows us the practical way to help make it easier for us to be a forgiving person.  It is easy to carry a grudge against a person, but if we belong to Christ, then we will learn to be forgiving.

Forgiveness is hard to do.  It’s not always easy to do the things that God has commanded us to do, which is why we must rely on the strength that God gives us.

It’s not always easy to forgive the unforgivable person, which is why we need to see them with the eyes of God.   Friends, let us extend God’s gracious forgiveness to others. This is what we all need to do.

After all, forgiveness is not just a suggestion or an option that we can consider; it is a commandment from God.

Prayer:

Lord, in the light of the Lenten season, we ask You to wipe away all our sins. May we also learn to forgive those who have wronged us. We know that we are all too prone to ask for forgiveness when we ourselves are unwilling to forgive. Amen.
