Speaking for the Truth

Lk. 4: 24-30

H
ave you ever experienced rejection from those closest to you? Or from eople whom you love and trust with all your heart? Worse, the rejection was a result of your good intention for the other person. How did you cope with it?

Perhaps, we all do. At one point in life, everyone has his share of rejection - from the denial of a simple favor from a friend to matters that could practically turn one's life upside down.

Jesus had His very own story of rejection, too. And it came from people He least expected it, those from His very native place. They even "drove him out of town and led him to the brow of the hill to hurl him down headlong" (v.29).

Makes us wonder, why such an attitude towards Jesus? They acted like it because they didn't like what Jesus has told them. The people in Jesus's time were no different from today's people. They, just like most of us, wanted to be told what they want to hear and believe about themselves, to be affirmed. We all want to be affirmed.

But Jesus's way of affirming people is telling us the truth, the truth that will affirm who we are and the value that He finds in each of us. And that truth has to be told, in comfortable and distressing times alike, even if life itself is at stake as what happened to Jesus.

Friends, let us always be encouraged to speak the truth and to share the Good News. We have to do it not only in acceptable times but more so, during times when our faithfulness and steadfastness are challenged. Let us bear in mind that our faith will grant us His grace to strengthen us and make us pass the storm around us as Jesus did.

Prayer:

Lord, may we be strong to speak the truth as we strive to be truthful in everything we do, imitating the courage of Jesus. Amen.
