To Look Heavenward

Lk. 16:19-31

I
remember the favorite homily of a chaplain priest in the university where I graduated.  He would ask us to make a choice on what to value more, is it our life here on earth which normally extends up to 90-100 years or eternal life which is 999 years and more?

When facing  setbacks or problems, I always remind myself that I am still here on earth and life, indeed, is not perfect.  Though imperfect, it is comforting to know that nothing is permanent, everything will come to pass.

And if one remains faithful, a reward is awaiting him in heaven - an everlasting life full of joy with God.

Our Gospel today gives both an inspiration and a warning.  It gives an inspiration to those who are mourning and suffering like Lazarus, and a warning to those who are blessed with a comfortable life and yet have done nothing for those in need.

Friends, the way we live our life here on earth is the basis if we will qualify for the eternal life in heaven.

May we always take every opportunity to do good.  And if along the way sufferings come, let us continue to hold on to the promises of God and look forward to the eternal life of joy and peace awaiting each one of us if we remain faithful to Him.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, may we always seek to be pleasing before You. Help us to remain faithful to You and focus not on our temporal life here on earth, but on the eternal life awaiting us in Heaven. May You give us the strength to endure life’s pains and give us the faith to always trust in You. Amen.
