We Are Rocks, Too!

Mt. 16: 13-19

I
have quite become a fan of Dwayne Johnson, the man called “The Rock” in the world of wrestling.  He was the first third-generation superstar in wrestling history, his grandfather and father being professional wrestlers themselves.  Dwayne was a world champion many times and has gained mainstream fame because of his achievements in his chosen field.

Today, we honor “The Rock,” not he being described above but The Rock of our Church, St. Peter, the Apostle.  He is recognized as the first Pope, the Head of the Catholic Church on Earth, Christ being its Heavenly head. It was to Peter whom Jesus charged the superintendence of all His sheep, without exception; and consequently of His whole flock, that is, His own Church (Jn. 21:15-17). And tend the flock he did faithfully, until his death.

To be called “The Rock” is one of the greatest of compliments one can get. It is such a great honor for both Dwayne and Peter to be called as such.

However, do you know that the name does not exclusively belong to just the two of them? We, too, can become “the rocks.”  Each one of us is called “to feed His sheep, to take care of His flock.”  Just like Peter, we are charged to care for God’s people.

In fact, that is what we were created for – to be extensions of God’s love for all His creations.

Friends, our faith in Jesus makes us into rocks or spiritual stones.  We may not be as famous as Dwayne or as great as Peter, but we can become the strong rocks for our brothers and sisters to start building their lives with Jesus.  Even just a single soul living for Christ because of us is enough qualification to also be the rock in Christ’s kingdom.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, help us to become strong in faith, so we can be as solid as rock on whom others can lean when they're weak and through whom they can find their strength to You. Amen.
