What Grace Can Do

by Dina Balicanot

Lk. 5:27-32

T
he Gospel celebrates how Jesus tore down the walls of tradition and prejudice because no one is really worthy and deserving of God's grace.  Rather, it is a free gift for anybody who will accept it.

When Jesus called Matthew, a tax collector, to follow Him, it is just as telling us that every person has a value in the eyes of God, and that everyone is  precious to Him.

He called Matthew because He saw the potential he has with God's grace and love.  However, Jesus also set the standard very clearly that if we are to follow Him, we must show the love of God at all time to all His children.

The perfect example of whom is Matthew, who, having blessed to have known Jesus, gave a great banquet for Him in his house, along with the other tax collectors.

We all have the responsibility and the honor of sharing this great love and wondrous grace of Jesus with the world. It is a fearful thought and a big undertaking at the same time, but it must be done.

Jesus has set the example for us to follow and live by. We need to be amongst the people who are unlovable. We need to be in relationships with those who do not know Christ so that they can come to know of Him through us. We all must be the cure for suffering in this world.

Prayer:

O my Jesus, may we choose to be always like You - accepting people as they are and seeing beauty and value in their unloveliness. Amen.
