T he 90-day campaign period for the presidentiables, vice presidentiables and senatoriables officially started last Tuesday, Feb. 9. Proclamation rallies were done in different fashions to get our attention and hopefully our votes.
Different platforms of government, various promises were presented before us in their speeches. Majority of the candidates are known traditional politicians (trapos) claiming to alleviate poverty and improve the economic condition of our country and the Filipino people.
These promises are not new to us. We hear the same assurance every election, but we still continue to lag behind our neighboring countries. We continue to experience the exodus of our kababayans to foreign lands to work there for lack of opportunities here in our country. Injustices, political killings and unfair treatment continue to exist.
These are clear indications that our political leaders have failed to deliver their promises because they have their personal agenda for running - to gain power and possessions. Will we still listen to them? We have no choice. But the power to elect our new leaders is in our hands. Therefore, we have to be wise enough to choose leaders who will put the interest of the people as their first priority, the ones who are running because they truly love and cares for us. But, can we find one nowadays? Maybe. That is why we have to listen carefully to our church leaders who have come up with guidelines for the voters. We must be conscious, pray hard and discern before choosing our bets for the coming May elections. A deeper contemplation is needed as we listen to the voice of God in guiding us to pick the worthy candidates. I consider the majority of our present crop of political leaders as deaf because they no longer hear the call of God to give untiring and genuine service to their constituents. But like the deaf man who was healed as he came before Jesus, I pray that they do the same, bring themselves before God for healing and represent the Lord as we elect them to office. Friends, we have to get involved as we put to office our national leaders for the next six years. Be open, be healed of your hopelessness. Always listen to Jesus and we will never go wrong. Believe that a positive change will happen in our country and you will play a vital role in bringing that significant change. Prayer:
Heavenly Father, as we listen to You, help us to elect leaders who will bring economic and spiritual transformation in our country. Amen. |
