W e are in the “month of love” and Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Some of us call this day the Heart’s Day because heart is synonymous with love. But if we will look upon the real world today, love is the heart of the human problem. Some people treat each other so badly. Spouses break their wedding vows. Some people act out in violence and hatred toward others.
Racism and hate crimes still exist in our world. Some people are filled with greed. Treachery and deception toward each other is very common.
Our Gospel today says, “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” It is also a verse from the Old Testament that speaks about hypocrisy. It means that if we worship God without the real inner devotion, then it becomes mere lip service. Every day can be Valentine’s Day or Christmas Day, but if we celebrate it out of tradition without giving meaning to it, then it becomes ordinary and empty. Friends, a heart is the center of the person, the control center of life. The heart isn’t just about emotions, but it’s our whole inner person.
The human heart is the location of genuine love, but it can also be the place of evil desires such as sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed and arrogance.
All these things are not caused by anything outside of us, but that come from within. We’ve got to deal with the heart, our own hearts and the hearts of others to get to the heart of the matter. Our world today is in need of hearts that know how to love more than any other time. Happy Heart’s Day!
Prayer:
Lord, we thank You for the gift of love. Teach us to put our heart in welcoming all and helping our neighbor. Amen. |
