The Family of God

ecoming a part of a Filipino family requires a radical commitment.  One would notice that the tradition of “mano” will never be forgotten in every Filipino household.  Hugs and kisses are also permissible, but doing the “mano” or asking the blessing from a parent, grandparent or an old relative by holding his or her hand and placing it on your forehead is an expression that should always be present during a gathering of any kind.

Today, our Gospel shows us what it takes to be in God’s family. It also requires a radical commitment that has radical benefits.

A lot of times, we think we are close enough to God to be in His family.  But Jesus points our there are no automatic relationships.  We don’t expect Him to give us special treatment.  We must believe Him.

In the time of Jesus, some people knew Him best and were close to Him. They cared for Him, were sympathetic to Him, but they didn’t believe Him. They thought He was a mentally unbalanced religious fanatic who talked about the kingdom of God being near, forgave people’s sin and reportedly healed sick and demon-possessed people.

It’s basically the same thing today.  Going to church, hanging around with others who know Jesus or joining a prayer group is not enough.  It does not guarantee that we make a part of God’s family.

Friends, God’s family is made up of those who do His will.  Wherever we are and whatever we do, we must always be committing ourselves to Him.  And commitment is not seasonal, it’s in every condition. Never forget that in every situation, there is always an opportunity to do an outreach, a worship, a fellowship, a training and a service.

Prayer:

Lord, we want not only to be close to You but also to be a part of Your family.  Help us to surrender everything to You and not compromise our loyalty and devotion to You. Amen.
