The Day of the Lord

Mk. 2:23-28

M
ark 2:27 says, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”  We have learned that the Holy Eucharist is the highest form of worship we can render to God and the most powerful source of grace we have on earth in our journey to a heavenly eternity.

But, how many of us who attend the Holy Mass every Sunday would admit that we always give Him the worship in the highest form?   I remember a priest who once said, “I try to make it a point that every time I celebrate the Holy Eucharist, I always consider it as my last so that I can give all the best for that celebration.”

In our Gospel today, Jesus reminds us about the true meaning of worship. When worship becomes about rules and laws that have to be obeyed, it’s easy to take our eyes off God. The focus changes to what we are doing, how we are doing it and whether those around us are doing it well.

We miss the very essence of worship when this happens.  It’s clear that worship is not about what we do for God.  It is all about what God does for us.   Friends, worship is more than just coming to Church on Sunday in our best clothes.  It is more than singing the right things using the right melodies to earn God’s favor.

The true worship of God begins in the heart.  It is about recognizing our great need before God.  It is about approaching Jesus with a heart that is fully aware that our life depends wholly on God’s grace and mercy.

It is about coming in humility before Him that is able to restore and heal and forgive.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, You have said that the day of worship is made for us and not us for that day.  We come to You in worship and confess our brokenness and sinfulness as You change them into righteousness.  Amen.
