by Lito Dawa John 16:20-23
I heard a preacher over Radio Veritas 846, the Catholic radio station in the Philippines, who has decided to leave his job of 14 years to go full time in the ministry, saying and I quote, “Life is not about success. It’s all about significance.” All of us want to become successful in life. We study hard and work even harder just to make our ambitions and dreams a reality. We are more than willing to undertake various sacrifices and exert a lot of effort to attain our desired goals.
Just recently, I had the opportunity to converse with a young overseas Filipino worker who started from scratch and is now earning at least three hundred thousand pesos a month. She told me she feels so empty in spite of her hefty material possession. She’s longing for something that would make her joy and life complete.
Many of us have met a number of individuals who are successful but unfortunately are not happy and contented with their achievements. They are still in search for the true meaning of life. Thus, I fully agree with what the preacher said that life is all about significance rather than success. God created us to make a significant impact on the lives of our brethren. Doing this would mean sacrificing our own concerns and interests for the benefit of our fellow human beings.
Initially, we feel sad, but as we move forward we start to appreciate and enjoy the very reason of our existence.
Jesus said, ”Truly, I say to you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will be sorrowful but your sorrow will turn to joy.”
FRIENDS, all the successes that we have if not offered back to the Lord will bring us sorrow rather than fulfillment. With God's grace and guidance, we must learn to set aside our own personal plans and humble ourselves before the Lord and accept His invitation to continue what He has started.
He calls upon us to stop chasing worldly success, but rather commit ourselves to make a significant impact on the lives of our fellowmen by bringing them before the Lord and work for their salvation.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we have always been focused on gaining success in our lifetime. In the process, we have forgotten that You have created us to make a difference in the lives of our beloved brothers and sisters. We ask You O Lord to keep us grounded and may all of us start to work for the real reason of our existence. Amen. |
