The Helper

John 16:5-11

“I
ndeed believe me: it is better for you that I go away, because as long as I do not leave, the Helper will not come to you.”

Throughout the centuries, there have been debates and misunderstanding concerning the person and work of the Holy Spirit.  Some think of the Holy Spirit as an “it” or a “divine force.”  He is neither.  We, Christians, believe the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity.

Personally, I consider the Holy Spirit as a weapon to defend against the fear of any persecution at home or anywhere.  Of course, He is not a nuclear warhead, a machine gun or the most sophisticated fighter plane.  But He is a gift of God Himself given to us in the person of the Holy Spirit.

Much is said concerning the Holy Spirit.  While others see Him as a mere “guiding light” that keeps us from falling into harm, let us always consider Jesus’ description of Him as a “Helper” or a “Comforter.” In short, He left us with “a friend to walk beside us” like He did when He was here.

Friends, let us not forget that this age is the time the Holy Spirit is at work.  We can’t afford to wait for another fourth person of God to emerge because there won’t be any. No matter what happens in this world, no matter what persecution we face, we can know for sure that we have a “Helper” that we can always depend on.

Prayer:

Lord, we thank You for revealing not just Your holiness to us but also for convincing our hearts of our need to believe in You through the works of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.
